HOMESCHOOL | A Simple Craft for a Noah's Ark Lesson

Every week I try to plan a few hands-on crafts that will work together with our Mystery of History lesson plans. I have three kids learning together right now so I have to find things that will work for the ages of 4, 7 and 9.

This past week we studied Noah and the Flood. I had several crafts planned but the kids really enjoyed building and designing their own ark out of craft sticks and glue. It was educational, fun and super messy!

Are you thinking about doing this craft? Awesome! Here is what you will need:

BUILDING THE ARK CRAFT
MATERIALS

Craft Sticks (Popsicle Sticks) I bought a package of 80 for each kid at the Dollar Tree
School Glue
Cardboard (cut this to fit your ark, it can be as small or as big as you want)
Construction Paper (we chose blue to represent the water of the flood)

INSTRUCTIONS

After discussing your Noah's Ark lesson give each child their materials. Tell them to use the glue and sticks to create and design their own version of the ark. As they create their arks you can tell them fun facts about the ark or ask them review questions from the lesson.

*REMINDER*
Don't force your children to create arks that you might think is accurate, allow them total freedom to express their ideas and creativity! Once they're finished building their arks, allow them to dry and then admire your beautiful pieces of art and biblical history!

QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION TOPICS WHILE YOU CRAFT

How big was Noah's Ark?
What was the ark made out of?
How many days and nights did it rain?
How long did Noah and his family live on the ark?

If you're looking for a history curriculum for your children check out Mystery of History. We love it! To see a fun round up of craft ideas and lessons from the first three lessons click here. And stay tuned because this week I'm posting the next three lessons' crafts and ideas! I also will be sharing this week's reading list which includes the books that will go along with our next MOH lesson plans!

MEMORY KEEPING | Week in the Life 2016 Walk Through of Monday & Tuesday

So I'm finally getting around to sharing my Week in the Life album with you guys. It's been done since July but I'm just now getting around to photographing and sharing it here on the blog. I did share some of my photos and words from a few days of the week back in May but I wanted to get a completed walk through posted here for you all.

I love looking at other's memory keeping projects so I thought I'd share mine so that it might inspire some of you to get on board with documenting your life this way. I'm all for creating new scrapbook friends. And if you already scrapbook, good for you! Have you tried this project yet? Comment down below if you have a link to yours, I'd love to check it out.

In case you've never heard of this project just click here (Ali Edwards | Week in the Life)... I'll let Ali, the creator of this project, tell you about it.

I love Ali Edwards and her brand of crafting goodies so it's no shock, as a loyal fan and customer, that I would do this documenting project. I'm pretty sure it's my favorite memory keeping project I've ever done. I've put together three WITL albums over the past three years and every time I do it I fall a little more in love with the process, the products, and most importantly the people and stories that of course are the why and reason to do this in the first place.

This was the first year I have ever purchased one of Ali's Week in the Life kits. IT MADE THE DIFFERENCE!!! The year's I attempted to do this project with out a good kit were difficult. However, with Ali's kit this project was easier to manage and more exciting to do. Along with the purchase of the kit comes a class room where you can chit chat with others that are doing this project as well and it was and is so awesome. It's so fun to find people that share your same hobbies!

Okay so without further rambling... here is the finished album! I've separated this walk through into  three parts. There's a ton of photos and inspiration and I didn't want to overload you. Let me know what you think in the comments and again if you've completed your album (or if you are a scrapbooker) leave a message down below so I can find your album, I would love to look at it.

Hope you enjoyed this peek at my Week in the Life Album. Stay tuned for Wednesday thru Sundays pages, coming soon! And I will have a video of all the pages together on my Youtube channel.

HOMESCHOOL | Mystery of History Volume 1 WEEK 1 Ideas and Activity Round Up for CREATION, ADAM & EVE, and JUBAL & TUBAL CAIN

Last week we started our new History/Bible Curriculum, Mystery of History Volume 1 Creation to the Resurrection, and so far we are loving it! Seriously, it's become our favorite part of the school day.

The Mystery of History
I chose this curriculum for our homeschool based on the recommendations of several other homeschool mamas. All of which are Christians and spoke highly of the program. So, without hesitation, I purchased the book and we started the next week.

We are only one week into it but man oh man is it some good stuff! The time we spend together working on the projects that are inspired from our MOH lessons is priceless and the knowledge the kids are retaining is exceeding my expectations.

The timeline (the book recommends you prepare a board that will serve as your biblical/historical timeline) is probably the best part! My kids love adding things to their timeline! It's only a small tri-fold board that I purchased from the Dollar Tree during our homeschool supply shopping trip and we will probably need many more but for now it's a piece of cherished artwork in our home.

Our board will be more of a collage than a straight time line, but you get my drift, right?

I didn't do much preparation for week one because I knew it would be pretty simple and easy but when it came down to it I was a little unprepared for our crafts and activities. However, since we had already learned about creation, Adam & Eve and Cain & Able in the first weeks of school (we started MOH in our third week) the first week's lessons for MOH were review! So we worked on our board and played our own version of America's Bible Challenge (the kids love playing that).

The activities that the kids did for the first few lessons before starting MOH  would work really well as activities for the actual lessons for week 1 so overall everything worked out for our first week!

The Mystery of History Series

If you're just getting started in MOH Volume 1 I have put together a round up of activities that I think would be AWESOME for little ones starting out! Now my kids are 4,7 and 10 so these activities are for that age range, but most of them can be tailored for any age.

Homeschool | Our 1st Grade Curriculum Choices

homeschool curriculum choices 1st grade learning reading schoolChoosing a curriculum is hard! Especially when you are new to homeschooling. There are probably thousands to chose from and not knowing where to begin can be overwhelming and frightening.

We are so lucky to have some family and friends that homeschool so when it came time to pick our books I asked for some advice and opinions. It took about a month to get it all figured out but we finally did it!

We are currently about 6 weeks into are school year and I couldn't be more happier with each one of our choices.

Homeschool | Our Pre-K Plan (VIDEO) and My FAVORITE PRESCHOOL RESOURCES!!!!

homeschool, preschool, school, learning, teaching, coloring, math, reading, writing, science, social studies

Okay so you have a preschooler and you want to homeschool, that's great! Now where to begin? The best piece of advice that I can offer as a new homeschooler is DON'T STRESS and DON'T SPEND MONEY on preschool curriculum. Homeschooling a preschooler does not have to be expensive in fact there are so many available resources for FREE or nearly FREE! In the video below I'm sharing our PRE-K curriculum choices. And honestly the words curriculum and preschooler kinda terrify me, especially when used together.

Our four year old is a beautiful, intelligent, stubborn thing. She likes the idea of school but when it comes to actually sitting down and doing a lesson or working on an assignment she would rather run around the house naked, I'm not kidding! She's creative and loves the outdoors. So why did I tell you that? I think it's important to teach a child using the things that they like. She loves to paint, create with Play Doh and dig in the dirt. So I'm trying a lot of activities where she can do just that.

The most important thing you can teach a 4 year old is to love learning! If you make learning a chore or a negative thing it will always be a chore! Learning, especially for this age, should be child led and natural. Don't force it! If they want to color give them a printable of this week's letter or shape. Tell them about it for a second and move on. They will retain more than you think. If they want to take off all their clothes and hang on the side of the couch, let them. I mean when in life will that ever be okay again? ;)
